Area for kids playing football

Posted on 09. May, 2010 by hbm_777 in Community, General

Had problems last year with kids playing football on the grassy area behind four houses in Earlswood Avenue.  This is the piece of land on the right hand side before you get to IHA houses at Pavillion Gardens.  Apart from this area getting ruined with the boys playing on it, the footballs sometimes come over into our gardens.  At one time last year I was having a family bbq and the ball came over our fence and narrowly missed the table with all the food and drink.  It’s also pretty noisy with all the shouting and not very safe for them as the ball sometimes goes on to the road when cars are driving into Pavillion Gardens.  I spoke to the Council about this and they sent letters out informing everyone that there is a piece of land over where the primary school should be which they will maintain so that the boys can play there.  Unfortunately the boys are still playing behind our houses.  They’ve been asked to use the other grassy area but for some reason they don’t.  Would appreciate any help from parents.  Could you please ask your kids to play football on the safer piece of ground.  Many thanks.

Until recently the kids were playing football over at the mud hill all the time. The reason that they are now back over playing on the grass at the top of the street is twofold. Firstly, the kids play a match against each other and it is the kids from Pavilion Gardens against the kid from the Robertsons and that is where they wish to play. Secondly, despite assurances from NAC to maintain the land over at the mud hill, they haven’t being doing this. Reason that I know is, that I walk my dog over there sometimes and the grass is covered in nettles, and the kids are fed up being stung by them time and time again. Furthermore, my son has been suffering from stye’s in his eyes and I can only assume that this is being caused by the dirt etc which is disturbed on the mud hill when they are playing there. Whilst I can sympathise with your predicament, what are the kids actually meant to do? Unlike some of the older kids, they are not being destructive, merely trying to have some fun and at the same time, keeping fit.

Regarding the play area behind the mud hill, didn’t realise this hasn’t been maintained recently. I’ll phone the council again to try to get them to do this asap. Also have just given some young boys into trouble as one of them have pulled out the irrigation tube on one of the newly planted trees. The landscape charge we’re in disagreement about with the council will surely just be increased to fix this kind of destruction. And again the football was kicked out onto the road when a car was passing, this is a bit of a worry, especially for the young ones. Some of the cars go at a fair speed along the road. Let’s hope we can resolve some of these issues. Of course the kids need to play somewhere, but surely safety is an issue.

Children definetly need to have somewhere to play although there is a fine line between children playing and doing what children should do and older children running wild causing damage to peoples property and being a general nuisence. This is a problem that seems to be escalating of late, and needs to be addressed by all residents in order to curtail this nuisence behaviour. I know some will say that as there is a lack of facilities for older children they have very little to do, this does not mean however, that these individuals should be allowed to disrupt others in the area and show a complete lack of respect or concern for the other residents in the area.
